Metabolism 101

Metabolism is a sensitive subject for many. Some bemoan the fact that their metabolism won’t let them eat the massive chocolate chip muffin without sacrificing their jean size while others sigh at the fact that no matter how many chocolate chip muffins they eat, they just can’t seem to gain any weight.

“I hate my metabolism!”
Sound familiar? Lets stop the hating of our metabolism; after all, it’s the reason that you are breathing at this very moment.

So what is metabolism?

Metabolism, in simple terms, is the process of food entering your body, your body breaking down food into energy, the energy being put towards use to build up and fuel the functions of your body, and then those energized body parts seeking more food to keep the whole system running. So your body is a factory, food goes in, life come out. Also, size correlates to metabolism. The bigger you are, the more energy the body needs to run the whole system. So yes, a 300-pound person has a higher metabolism than a 120 pound person. This explains why as your weight decreases, it is more difficult to lose weight because your metabolism does not require as much energy through food.

There are many ways to keep your metabolism healthy. The most important thing is to keep a consistent eating plan. Starvation only leads to the body breaking down glucose stores into energy, but once you eat again, the body will hold on tight to every single calorie you feed it and store all excess energy.

Other ways to keep your metabolism healthy is through exercise, healthy food choices and drinking lots of water. These are basic directions, but giving your body proper energy will yield great results.
